Recent Pew Research Center data shows that while religious affiliation has stabilized, the way people encounter ideas has moved from vertical (institutions) to horizontal (algorithmic feeds). In this environment, authority isn’t inherited—it’s assembled. As sociologist Heidi Campbell notes, digital spaces don’t just transmit religion; they reshape it through personalization and networked authority. What’s next: We are currently exploring this exact “handoff” through our Digital to Sacramental project. In partnership with The Evangelization Lab, we are replacing anecdotes with global research to map how individuals move from digital religious content into local, sacramental belonging. Artificial Intelligence accelerates this shift by creating a world of “mirrored meaning.” According to our Sacred Listening Study, over 60% of people are more skeptical of digital content because of AI. When an algorithm can generate a prayer, a sermon, or a devotional tailored specifically to your data profile, the value of the “un-programmable” rises. AI can provide information, but it cannot provide presence. In an age of synthetic content, the most radical act a leader can perform is to offer an attention that isn’t automated. The bottom line: The opportunity for the Church isn’t to out-pace the algorithms, but to provide what they can’t: a trusted guide. When we move from being “content creators” to “relational guides,” we offer a space for reflection in a world of reaction.
